Saber Tiger (サーベルタイガー Sāberu Taigā) and Thrasher (スラッシャー Surasshā) are the player ships in the MSX version of Salamander. They are piloted by Iggy Rock and Zowie Scott, respectively.

The Saber Tiger and Thrasher are state-of-the-art super space-time fighters of the Gradius Space Air Force. They are powered by the latest Wreek power engine which allows them to convert any substance into energy. In addition to that, they are both equipped with the ultra-high-performance navigation computer "ALEX", which allows for more sophisticated and real-time situation determination. ALEX is also programmed to analyze and decipher the ancient Latis alphabet, allowing it to translate the pieces of the "prediction of fire" on the spot.

- The Saber Tiger and Thrasher are both named after heavy metal bands, the former is named after the Japanese heavy metal band of the same name, and the latter was possibly named after a heavy metal band of the same name from New York that was formed in 1983, but split in 1985.
- Strangely, in the cutscenes, the ships' designs (as shown in the manual) are swapped, with the Saber Tiger using the Thrasher's design, and vice versa.
- The name “Saber Tiger” is mistranslated as “Sabel Tiger” in the game’s intro, even in the Japanese version.
