Destroy the core!
~ Announcer in Gradius Gaiden

Neo Big Core (ネオビッグコア Neo Biggu Koa?) is the sixth boss of the boss rush in Gradius Gaiden.

Description[]

Neo Big Core is a drastic modification of Big Core MK I. It is the fake last boss of the boss rush in Gradius Gaiden. It is barely similar to Big Core MK I, with the only similar features being moving up and down, its core number, and shooting four shots. The death animation consists of many mini-nukes exploding. The boss equipped with Funnel/Drone weaponry on higher loops, making it a drastic fight.

Attack patterns[]

*Note: All attack names are purely conjectural

  • "Beam Shot Neo": Neo Big Core's initial attack is shooting four cube-like lasers in front. However, the top and bottom shot bend at a slight angle. While doing this, it also moves up and down at various speeds. It will sometimes rapid fire the four shot and move up and down very fast as though in a frenzy.
  • "Wide Beam": After some time, it will come close and release a wide beam that covers 1/3 of the screen about 2 seconds after it's released. In Otomedius Excellent, the time for wide beam attack is significantly increased up to about 4 seconds in exchange for longer beam time.
  • "Conventional Bombers": Occasionally, it will release two mini-nuke bombs in front that explodes with a big radius. Also, every once in a while it will attempt to ram you and while it returns to the other side of the screen, releases several mini-nuke bombs that aim at you and explode. In Otomedius Excellent, this attack is significantly nerfed with the bombs now deploying at the hatches instead and will explode in a smaller radius.
  • "Drone Deployment": At loops 2 and beyond, Neo Big Core will deploy drones that shoot lasers from its hatches up and down. Often paired with either Wide Beam or Conventional Bombers. In Otomedius Excellent, the hatches that release drones in higher loops can now be destroyed.

Exclusive to Otomedius Excellent[]

  • "Bullet Spread": Neo Big Core will shoot bullet spreads while moving up and down. This attack was added due to significant nerfs in the Conventional Bombers.
