He is voiced by Hirotaka Suzuoki.
Salamander
Although Lord British never appears in person in the actual game, he is constantly mentioned in the manuals. British is the brave crown prince of Latis, an important ally of the Gradius Empire. When Latis is attacked by the Salamander Force, following a centuries old prophecy, the Latis Army proves to be no match against the invading forces, so the prince decides to throw himself into battle using a prototype space-fighter of his design to seek help from Gradius, which aid the prince by sending one of the Vic Viper space-fighters.
After the battle against Salamander, Lord British is crowned King of Latis and, in honor of his achievements, his ship would be named after himself and adopted by the Gradius Army as one of their main space-fighters.
Salamander (anime)
Lord British appears as one of the main characters in the Salamander anime, appearing in the first and third episodes. He is a tall, blonde young man who initially appears arrogant and stubborn, but eventually learns to trust others and put his ego aside to save his planet.
He first appears discussing with two pilots about the Moai-shaped monolith orbiting Latis. Upon returning to Latis, his advisors inform him about the discovery of another monolith on a excavation, identical to the one in the planet's orbit, which he promptly orders to be removed, against the advice of his counselour Doromo, who warns him about the "Prophecy of Fire". The monolith is broken during the extraction, causing the monolith in orbit to shatter as well.
Not long after the Salamander planetoid approaches Latis and begins its attack. Lord British is clueless about what to do, but Doromo asks for Gradius's help, who sends in three pilots, Dan, Stephanie and Eddie. However, Lord British distrusts them, since he found Eddie had been investigasting about his family. Against their advice he sends a squad of untrained fighters to attack Salamander, but they all end killed. Stephanie slaps him and, together with Dan, decide to face the invaders, but Lord British apologizes and joins them on his personal spacefighter. During the battle Eddie joins them as well and sacrifices himself, giving Lord British the time he needed to destroy the planetoid's core. After the battle Lord British condecorates Dan and Stephanie and declares Eddie a Hero of Latis.
In the third episode Lord British signs a peace treaty with Gradius and attempts to propose to Stephanie. However, she is kidnapped by Paula, who takes her into the Bacterian's artificial sun to have her brain implanted into Gofer. While the Gradian forces attract the Bacterian fleet both Dan and Lord British sneak into the artificial sun and rescue Stephanie, so Paula fuses with Gofer and transform into a Phoenix. During the fight, Lord British hands the controls of his craft to Stephanie, who fights along with Dan to defeat the Phoenix. After the battle Lord British gives up on proposing to Stephanie and gives a farewell to the heroes, returning to Latis with his advisors.
Trivia
- The name "Lord British" may be a reference to British game developer Richard "Lord British" Garriott. During the 1980s when Salamander was developed, Garriott was working on the Ultima series of role-playing games.
